Audi A4 S line 35 TDI S Tronic review – Comfortable and Sophisticated

The compact executive car class is known for catering to middle-aged executives who seek comfort, speed, and luxury without going overboard. When it comes to meeting these requirements, the Audi A4 is often the obvious choice. However, is it truly the best option?

Recently, I had the opportunity to drive the Audi A4 S line 35 TDI S Tronic for two days, covering various types of roads and terrains. Let me share my experience with you.

Car specifications and engine

The Audi A4 I drove came in a predictable gray color, adorned with chrome trims as part of the S line package. While Audi’s premium reputation holds true, opting for higher levels of equipment truly enhances the driving experience. The car featured a 10.1-inch MMI infotainment system, three-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, LED lights, and leather/dinamica sport seats. However, it was equipped with 17-inch wheels instead of the expected 18-inch ones, and it lacked a parking camera, which was a bit puzzling.

As an enthusiast, the engine is a crucial aspect of any car for me. The A4 was powered by a 2.0-liter TDI engine, producing 163 HP and 370 Nm of torque. While these numbers are decent, they didn’t offer the punch and responsiveness I expected. It’s worth mentioning that stronger engines and quattro drive options are available, but they come at a higher price point.

Exterior design

The Audi A4 boasts a stylish and sleek design, although it doesn’t necessarily turn heads. Its unobtrusive and practical appearance may appeal to those who prefer a more conservative approach. The front end could have been more captivating, and the hood sits lower than desired. On the other hand, the rear quarter of the car, reminiscent of Maserati, exudes a sporty feel with twin exhaust pipes.

Interior features and touch controls

Inside the A4, you’ll find the typical Audi elegance with high-quality materials and understated gray tones. The seats are beautifully sculpted and offer excellent support. The driver’s position is comfortable, and the overall premium feel pervades the cabin.

Regarding the infotainment system, it’s refreshing to see car manufacturers gradually abandoning the touch-only approach. The A4 strikes a good balance between touch screen controls for the infotainment system and real buttons for essential functions like climate control, start/stop, and drive mode. However, some button placement and design choices could be better.

Privacy is a significant concern in modern cars, and the A4 offers various options to manage your data and enable or disable certain features. While this may provide a sense of control, it raises questions about the necessity of such features in a luxury vehicle.

Driving experience

Audi cars are generally known for their excellent driving experience, and the A4, though not exceptional, delivers a refined and comfortable ride. The car exhibits precision, refinement, and ample grip. Even in Dynamic driving mode, the A4 focuses on a serene and smooth drive rather than exhilaration. The somewhat sluggish engine response was a bit underwhelming, requiring manual gear shifts to achieve satisfying acceleration on the highway.

Fuel consumption is reasonable, averaging about 6 liters/100 km during aggressive city and highway driving. The handling is linear and composed, making it well-suited for long journeys. However, the car’s size and weight are noticeable, and the brake pedal requires a significant depression to engage properly.

Conclusion

The Audi A4 S line 35 TDI S Tronic is an attractive choice for those seeking a comfortable and sophisticated compact executive car. While it may not offer the excitement and thrill of some competitors, it delivers a serene driving experience. The interior exudes elegance and comfort, with a few small drawbacks in terms of the touch controls.

Audi’s implementation of certain features and options raises concerns about privacy and user experience. However, if you seek a well-rounded car that combines class, power, and finesse, the A4 is a solid option. For an added touch of excitement, consider opting for the top-range engine and quattro drive.

Cheers!
