Imagine finding a hidden gem in the heart of South Dakota. A place where nature embraces you, offering tranquility and adventure in equal measure. Welcome to Roubaix Lake Campground, a haven tucked away in the Black Hills National Forest. Let us take you on a journey to discover this enchanting campground that will leave you yearning for more.
A Chance Encounter with a Ranger
Our journey began in Custer, South Dakota, where we sought a secluded camping spot. Little did we know that our quest would lead us to Roubaix Lake Campground. As we walked into the closed Forest Service office, hoping to find some information, fate intervened. A helpful ranger appeared, offering insights that would change our trip.
An Affordable Oasis
The ranger informed us that the usual campground near Deadwood was closed for the season. But fear not! She revealed a hidden gem, Roubaix Lake Campground, where camping is either free or available at a very low cost. This little oasis in the wilderness stole our hearts, making it the perfect spot for our adventure.
The Charms of Roubaix Lake Campground
Nestled within the majestic Black Hills National Forest, Roubaix Lake Campground boasts four loops. During our stay, only one loop was open, attracting small RVs and tents alike. It may have been technically closed, but that didn’t stop fellow adventurers from seeking solace within its confines. The scenic beauty of the campground, complemented by a serene lake, offered a picturesque backdrop for our stay.
Embrace Nature, Beware the Bees
As with any hidden paradise, Roubaix Lake Campground had its quirks. One downside to our stay was the presence of bees. They seemed to be everywhere, making it a tad challenging to fully enjoy the great outdoors. But fear not! Nature has its own way of enchanting us, and despite the bees, the allure of this campground remained irresistible.
Adventure Beckons
While Roubaix Lake Campground stole our hearts, our experience extended beyond its boundaries. Our days were filled with unforgettable adventures. We ventured to Sheridan Lake for a day of fishing, where we were amazed by the abundance and size of the trout. South Dakota’s lakes are renowned for their impressive trout, and we were lucky enough to catch a few. Smoked trout became a delectable treat during our stay.
Uncover the Past at DC Booth Historic Fish Hatchery
Intrigued by the history of fish propagation, we visited the DC Booth Historic Fish Hatchery in Spearfish, South Dakota. The hatchery showcased three trout species and provided a glimpse into the fascinating world of fish transportation before modern refrigeration.
Unveiling the Mickelson Trail
As our adventure came to an end, we almost overlooked a hidden treasure – the Mickelson Trail. Join us next week as we delve into the wonders of this scenic trail that captivated our hearts.
